Strategic Focus Area: STEAM Education

STEAM programs “educate both halves of the brain and prepare students for success in a world that values a well-rounded and innovative workforce.”
~ Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR)

Wells International Foundation is a strong proponent of the STEM to STEAM movement – that is, putting the Art in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Creative geniuses such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs were all highly artistic as well as scientific in their pursuits.

Through our STEAM SFA, WIF intends to help young girls and women embrace and pursue STEM careers and to excel at them by developing their artistic talents to their fullest potential.

We focus on the provision of opportunities for:

  • Educators to learn how to incorporate arts into methodologies for teaching math and science
  • Young girls to discover and embrace STEAM activities
  • College/graduate student women pursuing STEAM disciplines to maximize their chances of success in their chosen fields

WIF also acknowledges that technology can be a powerful means of introducing the arts to previously unexposed or underexposed audiences.

Global Educator Program – Paris

The Global Educator Program, organized for the Beauford Delaney: Resonance of Form and Vibration of Color exhibition in partnership with J Rêve International, was conceived around the concept of STEAM.  Beauford Delaney’s art and life were the focal point around which the program was planned.

The seven educators participating in the program learned about the University of Arizona Augmented Reality project, which coupled art and computer vision technology, and the Blippar platform on which the project is housed.  They received training on how the technology works and were able to take it back to their classrooms to apply it to new methodologies for using art to teach science, math, and other subjects.

Listen to the participants talk about their experiences in the video below:

As a result of this first, successful partnership between WIF and J Rêve International, WIF is partnering with J Rêve on a second, ambitious project – a professional development day in Washington, D.C. to be held in 2017.  Click here to learn more!
